Quantum Controls Present Energy Award to GlaxoSmithKline

The Most Innovative CO2 Reducing Project

May 2009

Energy Award

Quantum Controls Ltd present energy award to Glaxo Smithkline in May 2009 for the most innovative CO2 reducing project.

The award was presented by MD Kevin Brown to Site Electrical Engineer Mr Paul Aither.

Quantum were initially contacted by GSK to look at reducing the energy consumed in K Block utilising electric motors driving centrifugal fans through TASK units.

An initial energy audit was carried out, followed by a week long hire trial to prove the saving that could be achieved by fitting new ABB Motors and Drives on each application.

Quantum Controls supplied all new drives and motors, removed existing task unit, modified existing starter cubicles in Motor Control Centre Panels, Installed new cables, and fully commissioned 10 new systems in 2009.

The total installation provided GSK with a total reduction in CO2 of 196 tonnes and £23,766 per annum with a payback period of 1.38 years.

Quantum Controls win Low Carbon Innovation Award.

Variable Speed Drive supplier, Quantum Controls (formerly Slater Drive Systems), were highlighted as an exemplar of the North East taking a lead in low carbon markets. Gilbert Toppin presented Managing Director, Kevin Brown, with the first EEF/One North East Low Carbon Innovation Award. The award recognised their ability to grasp an opportunity, take risks and strive to pave the way for their sector, and the industry as a whole by creating profitable solutions to the global challenge of climate change.

Quantum Controls MD Kevin Brown presented to the audience about how they have provided a unique solution to industry for the reduction of individual’s companies Carbon Footprint. It was shown that a massive 75% of all energy used within industry today in actually consumed by electric motors. Quantum is the largest supplier of ABB Variable Speed drives and Motors in Europe. Quantum has extensive knowledge of how to save energy using Variable Speed Drive to control the speed of electric motors on various applications. A reduction in speed by 20% on a centrifugal application can produce up 50% reduction in energy consumption.

Quantum are unique in they have the skills to work with any type of industry from Water, Plastics Extrusion, Chemical to HVAC, to carry our energy audits on site to initially identify any potential savings, Quantum then monitor energy usage on identified application before hiring Variable Speed Drives to reduce speed of motor. Further monitoring is then undertaken and a full report is issued to client with definitive facts about energy savings that have been achieved and Carbon Footprint reduction.

Quantum work closely with the Carbon Trust who get involved to supply a cost neutral loan to client in order for them to purchase Turnkey solution from Quantum which involves Supply of new ABB Variable Speed Drive, Motors, Installation, Commissioning after sales support. This loan is then paid back over a period of time in relation to how much energy the client is saving on monthly basis, therefore load in actually cost neutral to client whilst project delivers energy cost reduction and Carbon Footprint reduction.

Quantum Control is the only company in UK to offer Variable Speed Drives for hire, 300 units from 5.5kW to 900kW, to install on temporary basis. This quantifies energy savings for client so they can then make the commercial decision to install permanent drives with the knowledge of what savings will be achieved. Quantum have helped business in UK to save in excess of £550k per annum in 2008

Over 100 of the regions manufacturers gathered to see how they can take advantage of the growing demand for low carbon products and technology at the event.

EEF’s CEO, Gilbert Toppin, told the delegation “Technologies are the future and manufacturing is the real economy.”

Gilbert warned “We need to carefully watch what the Americans do and make strong links with America.”

Manufacturers also discovered the range of support available from One North East, The Carbon Trust and The Technology Strategy Board.

Chris Pywell, Head of Strategic Economic Change at One North East, encouraged manufacturers to continue to look towards the future stating that “even in tough times we must not stop investing” Chris also stated that One North East are going to introduce measures to help companies through these tough times.

Manufacturers at the conference also had an exclusive insight into the government’s intentions towards the low carbon economy. David Thomas, the newly appointed Deputy Director of the Low Carbon Unit, part of the Department for Energy and Climate Change reinforced the importance of UK manufacturing in the move to a low carbon economy. He stated that a legally binding commitment to carbon reductions is being introduced and “UK manufacturing has a very important role” David also encouraged North East’s manufacturers to capture their share of the low carbon market.
